Cruise ships in Istanbul tie up at Galataport, a passenger port in Karaköy on the European shore. A passenger steps ashore through an underground terminal and needs a passport, a visa where the passport requires one, and a tram stop: the T1 line passes beside the port and runs to Sultanahmet and the Grand Bazaar.

In short · checked 27.10.2026

Ships dock at Galataport, and the T1 tram reaches the old city.

  • Galataport is the cruise port, in Karaköy. It has been open since October 2021, and passport control and customs sit in an underground terminal.
  • Carry the passport. Many passports are exempt from a visa for up to 90 days in any 180; some need a visa or an e-Visa. A harbour-city entry permit of up to 72 hours may be issued to people who arrive by sea to sightsee.
  • The T1 tram runs from 06:00 to 00:00. From the Tophane or Fındıklı stop it reaches Sultanahmet and the Grand Bazaar stop, with a tram every 2 minutes at peak.
  • Closed days: Topkapı Palace on Tuesdays, Dolmabahçe Palace on Mondays and the Grand Bazaar on Sundays.

Where the ship docks: Galataport in Karaköy

Galataport is the cruise port of Istanbul. It stretches along 1.2 km of shore between Karaköy (KAH-rah-kur-ee) and Salıpazarı, in the Beyoğlu district on the European side of the Bosphorus, and it opened in October 2021. The name covers the passenger terminal and the shore district around it. Karaköy is the old harbour district of Galata; the Galata Bridge joins it to the old city, and the T1 tram crosses that bridge.

Galataport’s own count · first five years since October 2021

845 ships, 2.49 million passengers.

The passenger figure includes crew. The port’s capacity and the other cruise ports of Turkey are in Ports in Turkey.

Underground
Passport control, customs and baggage handling are in an underground terminal of 29,000 m². Taxis, minibuses and tour buses are routed underground too, so the quay stays free.
Customs (gümrük)
The check on what a traveller carries across the border. At Galataport it sits beside passport control, underground.
176 panels
A system of 176 panels, 3 m each, marks off a temporary customs and security area on the quay while a ship is in port, so the waterfront stays open to walkers.
The garage
An underground car park holds 2,400 cars.

Papers: visa, harbour permit and passport

Take the passport ashore. A visa (vize) is the permit to enter, put in the passport or issued online as an e-Visa (e-Vize, from evisa.gov.tr, valid only for tourism or trade). Whether a passport needs one depends on its country, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has one line for each. Pick a passport for its line.

The harbour-city entry permit

  • Who may get it. Foreigners who enter Türkiye through a seaport to sightsee. The local governorates (the governors’ offices of the provinces) may issue it.
  • How long and where. At most 72 hours, valid only for sightseeing near the seaport where the visitor entered.
  • What it is not. It is not a visa and does not entitle the visitor to one.
  • The passport. The border officers do not keep it. The visitor gets a «Harbor City Entry Permit», which goes back to the authorities on leaving.

Three rules that hold for every passport

  • 90 days in any 180. The general limit for a visit, with a visa or without one, counted over any 180-day period.
  • Passport validity. The passport must be valid for at least 60 days beyond the permitted stay. The ministry advises at least six months from the day of arrival.
  • e-Visa. It is valid only when the purpose of the trip is tourism or trade. Work and study visas come from a Turkish embassy or consulate.

Starting or ending a cruise in Istanbul

A cruise can begin or end in Istanbul as well as call there. Galataport has its own words for it: transit for a ship that only stops and moves on, and indi-bindi (literally «got off, got on») for a turnaround, where passengers leave and others board. In 2025, 35.5% of the cruise passengers in Istanbul started or ended their cruise in the city (Ports in Turkey).

The quay before Galataport: 1826 to 2021

The Tophane shore has two centuries of history: a mosque and a clock tower, a quay, a post office, a car plant and a passenger hall. Four listed buildings (tescilli means listed for protection) were restored in the Galataport project: the Paket Postanesi, the Merkez Han, the Karaköy Yolcu Salonu and the Çinili Han. A han is a commercial building.

  1. 1826The Nusretiye Mosque is built for Sultan Mahmud II. An earlier barracks mosque of Sultan Selim III stood on the site. More on the sultan: Sultan Mahmud II.
  2. 1847–48The Tophane clock tower, also called the Nusretiye clock tower, is built for Sultan Abdülmecid I as a flag tower. More on the sultan: Sultan Abdülmecid I.
  3. 1892A quay is built along the shore, and the area’s direct link with the sea is cut.
  4. 1907–11The Paket Postanesi (the Parcel Post Office) is the first building on the quay. It later serves as a passenger hall, a hospital and a post office.
  5. 1910–14The Çinili Han (1910–11) serves first as a passenger hall and after 1940 as a post centre. The Merkez Han (1912–14) is built at the head of the quay.
  6. 1929–45A Ford plant builds vehicles on the port site.
  7. 1 July 1940The Karaköy Yolcu Salonu (the passenger hall) opens, designed by Rebii Gorbon after a competition of 1936. It stands on a plot cleared between the Çinili Han and the Merkez Han. Its clock is the work of Mustafa Şem’i, clockmaker of Sultan Abdülhamid II.
  8. 1980sCruise ships begin to call. Until then the quay received cargo ships.
  9. 2013–14On 16 May 2013 the Doğuş Group wins the tender for the Salıpazarı port with a bid of 702 million United States dollars. The site is handed over in February 2014. The passenger hall stays in use until May 2014.
  10. October 2021Galataport opens with the underground cruise terminal.

The tower
Four storeys with the clock, in the neoclassical style. A monogram (tuğra) of Sultan Abdülmecid I sits over the door on the sea side.
The lean
The tower leaned 1.5° toward the sea over time. The cause was the weight of the flagpole and shifting ground under the sea side.
The restoration
Earth had buried a storey. About 140 cm of the tower were raised out of the ground, and its surface was cleaned over 5 months with scalpel-like tools.
The clocks
Two clocks, one on the sea side and one on the land side, were overhauled.

Quick answers

Does a cruise passenger need a visa?

It depends on the passport: the MFA has one line per country, and ten are in Papers. A harbour-city entry permit of up to 72 hours may be issued to foreigners who arrive by sea to sightsee; it is not a visa.

What is the harbour-city entry permit?

A short sightseeing permit that the local governorates may issue. It lasts at most 72 hours and is valid near the seaport of entry. The border officers do not keep the passport, and the permit goes back to the authorities on leaving.

Where do cruise ships dock in Istanbul?

At Galataport in Karaköy, on the European side. The terminal is underground, with passport control and customs.

Which tram stop do I use?

Tophane or Fındıklı, the two stops the port names, on the T1 line.

When does the T1 tram stop running?

At 00:00. The first tram runs at 06:00.

What is closed on which day?

Dolmabahçe Palace on Mondays, Topkapı Palace on Tuesdays and the Grand Bazaar on Sundays. The Archaeological Museums, the Galata Tower and the Spice Bazaar are open every day. Holidays change this: What is open, day by day.

Where can I leave a bag?

In the lockers at the Visitor Center at the D Block terminal entrance and on level P1. They are rented by the hour.

How do I get from the airport to the port?

Lines from both airports are in Istanbul public transport; from the city centre, the T1 reaches the Tophane stop. A taxi goes to the port’s address, Meclis-i Mebusan Caddesi No: 8, Beyoğlu.
