2026 is marked “so far”: its figures cover the business days up to 29 September 2026.

Our gram-gold series starts on 2 July 2018, so earlier years show a dash, and the first gold year covers only the part of the year from that day.

The dollar

One dollar in lira, every year

In 2005 one lira was worth about 74¢; on 29 September 2026 it is worth 2.0¢. Each column is a year: the bar is the average rate, the thin line runs from the lowest to the highest day.

  • Year average
  • Lowest to highest day
  • so far

The scale is logarithmic and shows lira per dollar: equal heights mean equal percentage moves, so the early years stay visible next to the recent ones. Select a column to jump to that year in the table.

Minimum wage

The minimum wage in dollars and gold

The wage in lira goes up every year, but what it is worth in dollars or gold tells its own story. For each year since 2005: the net monthly minimum wage converted at each day’s rate, then averaged.

Net means after social-security and tax deductions. Before 2022 the Ministry’s net figure includes the minimum living allowance (AGİ); since 1 January 2022 no income tax or stamp tax is taken from the minimum wage, so years before and after are not exactly like for like.

How it works

How the numbers are worked out

Every rate comes from an official publication, and the sums are simple enough to check by hand.

Which rate

The dollar, euro and pound are the Central Bank’s indicative forex selling rates (TCMB “döviz satış”), in lira per unit. The Bank sets them from the average of hourly interbank quotes between 10:00 and 15:00 and publishes them in a bulletin at 15:30 on every business day. They bind nobody: what a bank or exchange office charges is its own decision.

Which day a rate belongs to

We date every rate by the TCMB bulletin that announced it: the rate shown for a day is the one in the bulletin published on that day, which is what the Bank’s archive page for that date shows. The Bank’s EVDS data service files the same rate under the next business day, the day it applies from, so the two can differ by one day. There is no bulletin on weekends, public holidays and the half working day before a holiday: for those days the page shows the last bulletin before, at most 10 days back, and says so.

How a year is worked out

A year’s figure is the plain average of the bulletins published in that year, one per business day. The year-end is the year’s last bulletin; lowest and highest are the lowest and highest bulletin rates with their dates, not intraday peaks. The current year runs to the latest bulletin and is marked “so far”.

The minimum wage

The wage is the net monthly amount announced by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security (ÇSGB) for the period that covers the day; some years have two periods. In dollars or grams of gold it is that day’s wage divided by that day’s dollar rate or gold price, and a year’s figure averages those daily results. Before 2022 the net figure includes the minimum living allowance (AGİ); from 1 January 2022 no income tax or stamp tax is deducted.

Gram gold

Gram gold is the closing price of gold per kilogram on Borsa Istanbul, in lira, divided by 1,000. Our series starts on 2 July 2018, where the official closing prices available to us begin. Earlier prices are not reconstructed, so earlier years show a dash.

The lira and its zeros

On 1 January 2005 the new Turkish lira replaced the old one at 1,000,000 old lira to 1 new lira (Law No. 5083). A Council of Ministers decision published on 5 May 2007 dropped the word “new” as of 1 January 2009. Our data start on 3 January 2005, in the new lira, so every figure here is comparable with today’s. We have not adjusted anything.

Worked example Dollar in 2025: 249 business days with a rate. Average 39.5697, year-end 42.9229 (31 Dec), lowest 35.3160 (2 Jan), highest 42.9395 (30 Dec).

Questions

Questions about the lira by year

How many lira was a dollar in 2015?

In 2015 the dollar averaged ₺2.7258 over the year’s business days. It ended the year at ₺2.9233 (31 December 2015), with a low of ₺2.2819 on 13 January 2015 and a high of ₺3.0654 on 14 September 2015. These are the Central Bank’s indicative selling rates.

How much has the dollar risen against the lira since 2005?

On 3 January 2005 one dollar cost ₺1.3448; on 29 September 2026 it costs ₺49.0013 (×36.4). The sharpest full year was 2021, when the dollar rose 80% from year-end to year-end.

Which exchange rate is this: the bank’s, the exchange office’s or the official one?

They are the Turkish Central Bank’s (TCMB) indicative selling rates for foreign currency, in lira per unit, published in a bulletin at 15:30 on every business day. The rate shown for a day is the one in that day’s bulletin, as on the Bank’s archive page for the date. They bind nobody, so the rate a bank or an exchange office charges differs from them; cash (banknote) rates also differ slightly.

How is a yearly figure worked out: average, year-end, lowest or highest?

By default the table shows the plain average of the bulletins published in the year, one per business day. Switch to year-end (the year’s last bulletin), lowest or highest (the lowest and highest bulletin rate, with its date) if you need those. 2026 is still running, so its figures cover the bulletins up to 29 September 2026.

What is the minimum wage worth in dollars today, and when was it worth most?

The net minimum wage is ₺28,075.50 a month, which at the dollar rate of 29 September 2026 is $573. Measured as yearly averages, it was worth most in 2025 ($561) and least in 2005 ($260). Figures before 2022 include the minimum living allowance (AGİ), so they are not exactly like for like.

Why does the table show no gram gold for the early years?

Our gram-gold series starts on 2 July 2018, where the official Borsa Istanbul closing prices available to us begin. We do not reconstruct earlier prices, so earlier years show a dash. On 29 September 2026 a gram of gold cost ₺6,548.00.

Why does the history start in 2005, and what happened to the old lira?

On 1 January 2005 the new Turkish lira replaced the old one at 1,000,000 old lira to 1 new lira (Law No. 5083). A Council of Ministers decision published on 5 May 2007 dropped the word “new” as of 1 January 2009. Our rates begin in 2005, in the new lira, so every figure is comparable with today’s.

How current are the figures, and what about weekends?

The page reads our data platform, which takes the rates from TCMB. The data were last checked on 30 September 2026, and the latest dollar rate is the one in the bulletin of 29 September 2026; the newest bulletin shown can be a business day behind TCMB. Weekends and public holidays have no bulletin, so the lookup shows the last bulletin before them (at most 10 days back) and says so.
