Sındırgı, Balıkesir alone recorded 15,200 earthquakes, 35% of Turkey’s total. Its strongest was M6.1.

Mostly shallow

Shallow quakes shake the surface harder. 84% of these began less than 10 km down; just 28 started deeper than 70 km.

Seismographs catch 27% more small quakes between midnight and 6 am than in working hours, when traffic and machinery drown out the faintest. For magnitude 2.5 and up the gap shrinks to 14%.

What to do when the ground shakes

AFAD’s basic advice, in short. In an emergency, call 112.

Drop, cover, hold on

Get down on your hands and knees, cover your head and neck (under a sturdy table if you can) and hold on until the shaking stops. Keep away from windows; do not run outside or use the lift.

When the shaking stops

Check yourself and others for injuries. If you smell gas, turn it off and open the windows. Leave a damaged building carefully, by the stairs, and expect aftershocks.

Know your assembly area

Look up the emergency assembly area nearest your home on e-Devlet now, before you need it, and agree on it with your family.

Find it on e-Devlet

Emergency number: 112

One free number for ambulance, fire and police anywhere in Turkey. Keep calls short, and send messages to keep the lines free for others.

Keep a ready bag

Water, long-lasting food, a torch, a whistle, a power bank, a first-aid kit, copies of your documents and the medicines you take.

Questions

Questions about earthquakes in Turkey

Was there an earthquake in Turkey today?

Yes. In the 24 hours to , AFAD located 87 earthquakes in and around Turkey, 0 of them of magnitude 3 or more. The strongest was an M2.7 earthquake off Çeşme, Izmir at . Most quakes are too small to feel; the list above updates itself every few minutes.

How many earthquakes does Turkey have in a year?

In the 12 months to , AFAD located 43,530 earthquakes in Turkey, about one every 12 minutes. Most were tiny: 962 reached magnitude 3, 118 magnitude 4 and 9 magnitude 5 or more.

Which province has the most earthquakes?

Over the past 12 months Balıkesir had the most, 16,188 (37% of Turkey’s total), followed by Malatya (3,872) and Kütahya (3,669). Counts like these jump after a strong quake, because its aftershocks are counted too.

When was the last big earthquake in Turkey?

The last earthquake of magnitude 6 or more was the M6.1 earthquake in Sındırgı, Balıkesir on . The latest of magnitude 5 or more was the M5.4 earthquake in Karaköprü, Şanlıurfa on .

What was the strongest earthquake in Turkey since 1990?

It was the M7.7 earthquake in Pazarcık, Kahramanmaraş on , the strongest in AFAD’s catalogue since 1990. The next strongest was the M7.6 earthquake in Elbistan, Kahramanmaraş on . In all, Turkey has had 22 earthquakes of magnitude 6 or more since 1990.

Are there more earthquakes than usual in 2026?

No. By , Turkey had 61 earthquakes of magnitude 4 or more in 2026, below the average of 85 for the same dates since 2000 (the median is 52). The average is pulled up by exceptional years such as 2023, which had 734 in all.

When was the last earthquake in Istanbul?

AFAD placed 234 earthquakes in Istanbul province in the past 12 months (3 of magnitude 3 or more); the latest was on . The Sea of Marmara as a whole had 799. Since 1990, the strongest earthquake placed in Istanbul was the M6.2 earthquake off Silivri, Istanbul on .

Why do AFAD and Kandilli give different numbers?

AFAD, the government’s disaster agency, and Boğaziçi University’s Kandilli Observatory run separate seismic networks and calculate each quake on their own. The same earthquake can therefore appear with a slightly different magnitude, time or location, and small quakes may be listed by one and not the other. This page uses AFAD’s catalogue throughout.

What should I do during an earthquake?

Drop to your hands and knees, cover your head and neck, ideally under a sturdy table, and hold on until the shaking stops. Keep away from windows and do not use the lift. Afterwards, check for injuries and gas leaks, leave damaged buildings carefully and go to your emergency assembly area. In an emergency, call 112.

Method

Quakes count as in Turkey when they strike on land (lakes and reservoirs included), in the Sea of Marmara, at a Turkish island, or at sea within 30 km of the nearest Turkish district, but not at a foreign island; provinces count them by AFAD’s nearest district. Days and hours are Türkiye time. Magnitudes are AFAD’s own and can differ from other agencies’ figures for the same quake; before 2008 AFAD mixed several magnitude scales, so older counts are indicative. Energy uses log10 E = 1.5 M + 4.8 (joules).
