The Knights built a chapel there in the 15th century, probably over an older building; Spanish knights repaired it in Gothic style in the early 16th century. Halicarnassus: tomb, theatre and gate

Halicarnassus (Halikarnassos) is the ancient town of today’s Bodrum. The Dorians founded it about 1000 BC where the castle stands, on what was then an island, as Herodotus tells it. Mausolos moved the capital of the Carian satrapy, a province under Persian rule, to Halicarnassus. Alexander the Great took the region in 334 BC and the Romans in 133 BC.

The Mausoleum (Maussolleion)

Ancient authors count the tomb among the Seven Wonders, and the word mozole (mausoleum) comes from it. Pytheos and Satyros were its architects. The terrace measured 105 × 242 m and the tomb stood about 50 m high: a high podium, a section with 36 Ionic columns, a roof of 24 steps and, on top, a quadriga (a four-horse chariot) with statues of Mausolos and Artemisia.

  1. 353 BCMausolos ruled Caria as satrap, the Persian governor, for 24 years. The tomb was begun in his lifetime, and his wife continued it after his death in 353 BC.
  2. AD 1304The tomb fell in an earthquake after standing about 1,650 years. The Knights arrived in 1402, found it fallen and took the stones for the castle.
  3. 1846–1858The remains were taken to the British Museum, in 1846 and in 1856–1858.
  4. 1966–1982A Danish team dug the site from 1966 to 1977, and the museum was arranged in 1982.

The ancient theatre (Antik Tiyatro)

Built in the 4th century BC on the south slope of Göktepe hill, in the middle of Bodrum. The seating (cavea) is horseshoe-shaped and cut from the rock, with marble blocks; a horizontal passage splits the seats, and 11 stairways make 12 sections. Bodrum Municipality calls it one of the oldest theatres in Anatolia.

The Myndos Gate (Myndos Kapısı)

The gate is believed to have been built in the 360s BC, west of Halicarnassus. It has two monumental towers and an inner courtyard. Ditches of the 4th century BC outside it foiled Alexander’s attack of 334 BC. The first phase of repairs to the walls and towers north of the gate was finished in 1999.

Figures, dates and names are as the pages printed them on 31.10.2026; the 2026 season, the fares and the forest measures are those of 2026. The drawing in the tool is schematic: only the 47.50 m height is a printed figure. The sources disagree on the building years of the castle (1406–1523 and 1406–1522), the address of the Mausoleum museum and the capacity of the theatre; each is given with its owner.
