What it is: a stadium made for an Olympic bid
Atatürk Olympic Stadium (Atatürk Olimpiyat Stadı) was built from 1999 to 2002 in the Olympic Park (Olimpiyat Parkı) of Başakşehir, an ilçe (district) of Istanbul. The idea grew out of Istanbul’s Olympic candidacy (chapter 7). Atatürk is the surname that Mustafa Kemal, founder of the Republic, took; the surname story has the detail.

The stadium is an all-seated bowl (tümü koltuklu) with floodlights, a stand for disabled visitors and a closed-circuit camera system.
It stands in the 584-hectare Olympic Park.
