In Astana, go to Khan Shatyr for its indoor beach. In Almaty, go to Esentai for luxury brands and Dostyk Plaza for a late film.
- Usual hours: most malls open 10:00–22:00 every day. Supermarkets open from 09:00, and some cinemas run until 03:00.
- Indoor beach: Sky Beach Club on the 5th floor of Khan Shatyr, open 10:00–21:00, with pools at +29 °C under the tent.
- Tax Free: VAT is 16%. You can claim it on a purchase of at least 43,250 KZT, but only with a passport from outside the Eurasian Economic Union.
- Keruen in Astana: the mall’s two web pages give different hours, so call before a late or Sunday visit.
- Metro: Globus is about a 10-minute walk from Alatau station. Forum, MEGA Park, Dostyk Plaza and Esentai are each more than a 15-minute walk from the nearest station.

Astana: four malls on the Left Bank
All four Astana malls are on the Left Bank, the new part of the capital with Bayterek and the government quarter. Khan Shatyr is a sight in itself. MEGA Silk Way is the one for a long day with children. Keruen sits right by Bayterek, and Asia Park is the everyday choice.

Khan Shatyr (Turan Ave 37) is the tent-shaped building designed by Norman Foster. The mall calls it the largest tented building in the world. Its shops include 47 women’s and 44 men’s fashion stores. The Chaplin cinema is on the 2nd floor and the food court on the 3rd. Fame City, a family centre with rides and slot machines, is on the 4th floor, and Sky Beach Club is on the 5th. The mall opens 10:00–22:00, and until 23:00 on Friday and Saturday.

Three pools under the tent: a main pool 1.40 m deep, a children’s pool from 10 cm to 1.40 m, and a water slide. The water is +29 °C and the sand is heated. It opens 10:00–21:00, earlier than the mall closes. The club does not list ticket prices on its page, so call +7 (701) 883-96-25 or +7 (717) 257-77-87 before you go.

Almaty has more malls than Astana, and they are more spread out. Esentai and Dostyk Plaza are the two central ones. MEGA Park and Forum are bigger family malls with car parks. Colibri and Globus are smaller, and they publish no visitor hours.

Tax Free: the 16% VAT you can claim back
Kazakhstan’s VAT is 16%, and it is already in the price on the tag. Tourists from outside the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) can claim it back on goods they take home unused. - In the shop. Look for the Tax Free sign. Before you pay, ask for a Global Blue Tax Free form and show your passport.
- Keep the goods unused. They must leave in your own luggage. Food does not qualify. Keep the original receipt with the form.
- At the airport, before you leave. Show the form, the receipt and the goods at customs. The stamp must come within three months after the month of purchase, plus that month itself.
- Post the form. Drop the stamped form and the receipt into the Global Blue box next to the customs office at the airport.
Older amounts online
Some shop and mall pages still show older Tax Free amounts. Esentai’s Tax Free page, for example, gives two different minimums, 61,260 and 78,640 KZT. Go by the 43,250 KZT on Global Blue’s Kazakhstan page.
Parking: what a stay at Forum costs
Forum Almaty is the only mall here that publishes its parking prices. The first 15 minutes are free. After that, an hour costs 500 KZT in the covered car park and 200 KZT outside. Forum doesn’t say how it charges for a part hour, so the meter shows both ways.

The car park is open every day 10:00–03:00, with 1,197 spaces on two levels. Pay at the machines or in the app. Prices are from Forum’s parking page, and the machine’s total is the one that counts.
The other malls publish less. Keruen’s hours page says surface parking is free and underground parking is paid, but it gives no price. Esentai has 700 spaces and valet parking. MEGA Silk Way has MyCharge EV charging 08:00–02:30 at entrance 3, and Esentai has a Tesla Supercharger and Porsche charging. Check the sign at the barrier for the price.
Getting there: bus, metro or taxi
The simplest way is a taxi to the address. Use the mall’s name, street and city together, because names repeat between the two cities: there is a MEGA in both, and a Dostyk Street in Astana as well as Dostyk Avenue in Almaty.
Metro
One line with 11 stations, open 06:20–00:00. A token costs 120 KZT (60 KZT for children). A smart card costs 180 KZT, then 120 KZT a trip. Bank cards and Onay cards work too. The metro’s station pages do not list these malls as nearby places. On the map, Globus is about a 10-minute walk east of Alatau station on Abay Avenue. Forum, MEGA Park, Dostyk Plaza and Esentai are each more than a 15-minute walk from the nearest station.
Bus to Asia Park
Asia Park lists 11 bus routes: 10, 12, 27, 35, 40, 41, 43, 46, 47, 117 and 118. Khan Shatyr, Keruen and MEGA Silk Way are all on the Left Bank, close enough for a short taxi ride between them.
Walk to Keruen
Keruen stands on the water-green boulevard by Bayterek, so you can visit it on the same walk as Bayterek.
Bus or trolleybus to Globus
Globus is at the corner of Abay Avenue and Auezov Street. Its owner says bus and trolleybus stops are right next to it.

What is the biggest mall in Kazakhstan?
Khan Shatyr in Astana is the best known. It has 56,376 m² of shop space and over 10 million visitors a year, and the mall calls its tent the largest in the world.
What time do malls in Kazakhstan close?
Most close at 22:00. Khan Shatyr stays open until 23:00 on Friday and Saturday. Supermarkets and food courts often run until midnight, and the CINEMAX cinema at Dostyk Plaza runs until 03:00.
Is there a beach inside a mall in Astana?
