Taxis in Turkey: Prices, Apps and Scams to Avoid (2026)

An Istanbul yellow taxi starts at ₺71.94, adds ₺47.92 per kilometre and has a ₺230 minimum under İBB’s tariff effective 20.07.2026. Istanbul Airport to Taksim comes to about ₺1,970 before waiting and tolls. An app gives you an estimate; the running meter sets the taxi fare.

Watch the meter

Choose your city and taxi, then try an airport trip or your own distance. The red display shows the estimated meter fare; the receipt keeps tolls separate. Use the traffic switch for extra minutes spent stationary.

The calculation is start charge plus distance, raised to the city’s minimum when needed. İstanbul’s meter switches to time charging at low speed; here the waiting control adds only stationary minutes, at ₺9.98 per minute for a standard yellow taxi.

Which app?

Use an app to keep the destination, driver details and journey together. Check the taxi category, payment method and any booking or payment fee. At the end, compare the fare entered in the app with the meter before approving it.

Yellow, turquoise, black

Choose a standard yellow taxi for the lowest Istanbul tariff. Turquoise is the next segment up; black is the premium segment. Select the same category in the calculator as the car you board.

A yellow taxi carrying 8 passengers has its own Istanbul tariff: ₺62.29 per kilometre, with a ₺300 minimum. Check capacity as well as colour. İzmir’s tariff starts at ₺40, adds ₺54 per kilometre and has a ₺210 minimum.

From the airport

At Istanbul Airport, follow the taxi signs to the rank outside arrivals. Give the dispatcher your destination and taxi category. Ignore ride offers inside the hall. Put the address into your map and check the meter as the car moves away.

Agree the route before the crossing

Ask which road the driver plans to take. For an Istanbul trip crossing the Bosphorus, choose the bridge or tunnel in the meter above. Airport motorway tolls depend on the chosen road; ask for those separately and keep the toll detail with your receipt.

An airport bus costs far less than a taxi. Before you join the taxi queue, check the bus stop nearest your hotel on the operator’s site.

Three tricks

Keep the meter visible and settle the payment while still seated. If the driver refuses to start it, leave before travelling. If the payment amount changes, pause, point to the meter and keep the fare screen in view. An app’s journey record gives you the vehicle and trip details to use afterwards.

Look at the value

The 200-lira note is purple; the 20-lira note is green. Read the number, not just the colour, and check the change against the fare.

With a card, read the amount on the terminal before tapping. With an app, review the final fare and any separate charge before approving. Save the receipt or trip screen while you still have the vehicle details in front of you.

Say it in Turkish

Show the driver the Turkish line when you need the meter, a stop or a receipt.

The durak on the corner

A taxi stand, or durak, is a useful place to arrange a local pickup. Ask your hotel or a nearby shop to call a neighbourhood stand. Give the full address and say how much luggage you have. Once the taxi arrives, check its category and ask for the meter just as you would with an app booking.
