Public Transport in Izmir 2026: Fares, İzmirim Kart, Airport Train and Ferries

İzmir runs on one card. The İzmirim Kart opens the metro, the trams, the city buses, the İZBAN trains and the ferries, and in October 2026 a full-fare ride costs 35 TL. Change within 90 minutes and the next ride is free. Below: the fares, a tap-by-tap counter for the transfer rule, the airport train and night buses, a map of the rail and ferry lines and a board of what is running right now.

Short answer · checked 13 October 2026

One ride costs 35 TL with an İzmirim Kart, and changing within 90 minutes is free.

  • Bus, metro, tram, ferry: 35 TL full fare; 17.50 TL in the half-fare hours, 05:00–07:00 and 19:00–20:00.
  • 90-minute transfer: rides you board 5 to 90 minutes after the first tap are free.
  • İZBAN trains: 40 TL for the first 20 km, more after that. The gate first takes the fare to the end of the line; the orange validator gives the rest back.
  • Bank cards: 39 TL a ride, no transfer, and not on İZBAN.
  • Airport buses: night only now, 77 TL. By day, take the İZBAN train.

The card: İzmirim Kart, Bilet 35 or a bank card

Every ride in İzmir is paid with a tap on a reader; drivers don’t take cash. There are four ways to pay, and they don’t cost the same. Pick one to see the price, where to get it and what it can’t do.

How will you pay?

  • Price: the plastic card costs 200 TL, named (personal) or anonymous (Hamiline).
  • Where: at kiosks and shops with the İzmirim Kart sign, and at the YÜKLEMATİK machines in stations, which also top it up.
  • Fare: 35 TL a ride, the 90-minute transfer and the half-fare hours.
  • Discounts: Genç (students and young people), teacher and 60–64 fares need a personal card in your name; from 65 you ride free with a 65 Yaş Kartı.
  • What: a throwaway paper card with a set number of rides: 2 rides 140 TL, 3 rides 205 TL, 10 rides 540 TL.
  • Limits: valid for 35 days from the first ride; no transfer and no half fare.
  • İZBAN and airport: an İZBAN trip uses 3 rides, an airport bus 2.
  • Where: contactless bank cards work on buses, the metro, trams and ferries.
  • Fare: 39 TL a ride (19.50 TL in the half-fare hours), with no transfer and no discount.
  • Not on: İZBAN trains and the İZTAŞIT district buses.
  • Digital card: the İzmirim Kart app shows a QR code that you hold to the reader.
  • Top-ups: 30 to 2,750 TL in the app. An online top-up can take up to an hour to reach the readers, so top up before you set off.
  • Phone: you need mobile data. Read about prepaid SIM cards and phone registration before you rely on a foreign phone.

What a ride costs: the 90-minute rule, tap by tap

The price on the reader depends on your card, the time and what you tapped before. The first tap pays 35 TL and opens a 90-minute window; a bus, metro, tram or ferry you board 5 to 90 minutes later is free. İZBAN is different: it charges by distance, gives no free transfer and doesn’t open a window. Pick a trip, a card and a start time.

From the airport: İZBAN by day, buses by night

Adnan Menderes Airport has its own İZBAN station. Trains leave every 13 minutes by day, from 05:12 to 00:54, and reach Alsancak in 28 minutes for 40 TL. The four airport bus lines, 200, 202, 204 and 206, now run only at night, when the trains have stopped: three buses a night on each line. Choose where you’re going and when you’ll be on the platform.

Airport to city by İZBAN

  1. Card first. Bank cards don’t open the İZBAN gate: you need an İzmirim Kart or a Bilet 35.
  2. At the gate. The card has to hold the fare to the far end of the line: 122.16 TL from the airport on a full card.
  3. Ride. Şirinyer 16 minutes, Alsancak 28, Halkapınar 37, Karşıyaka 50.
  4. Orange validator. Tap it before you leave your station: at Alsancak 82.16 TL comes back.
  5. Change. The metro or tram after İZBAN is a new 35 TL fare.

Havaş also runs shuttle buses from the airport into the city. We couldn’t confirm a current price from Havaş itself, so ask at the desk. For a taxi, read our guide to taxis in Turkey first.

İZBAN fares: pay by the kilometre, get the rest back

İZBAN is the 136 km suburban line from Aliağa in the north to Selçuk, the town by Ephesus, in the south. The first 20 km cost 40 TL; each km after that adds 1.50 TL on a full card. At the gate the card is charged as if you were riding to the far end of the line. Tap the orange refund validator when you get off and the difference comes back, as long as you rode at least one station, boarded nothing else in between and tap within 3 hours. Forget it, and the whole amount stays spent.

The network: rail lines and ferries on one map

İzmir’s rail lines follow the bay. İZBAN runs north to south, the metro east to west from Evka 3 to Narlıdere, the Konak Tram along the south shore and the Karşıyaka Tram along the north, with ferries across the water between them. They meet at Halkapınar and Fahrettin Altay. Tap a line to see where it goes and how often it runs.

The İzdeniz ferries cross the bay between Karşıyaka and Bostanlı on the north shore and Konak, Pasaport and Alsancak on the south. Konak to Karşıyaka takes 15 minutes and costs the same 35 TL as a bus, and the 90-minute transfer counts on board, so a ferry between a metro and a tram ride can be free.

Good to know: bikes, lost property and free rides

A few rules and numbers that save time.

  • Bikes on the metro: bicycles and e-scooters ride free in the first and last car; under-16s need a parent with them.
  • Lost property: the metro’s office is at Çankaya station, (0232) 461 54 45.
  • Help line: 153 answers questions on cards, fares and lines.
  • Free travel: people aged 65 and over (on a 65 Yaş Kartı), people with a disability of 40% or more (and a companion for a severe disability), martyrs’ families, veterans and national athletes ride free with a personal card.
  • District buses: long-distance lines to outer districts cost 77.50 TL, and the İZTAŞIT buses don’t take bank cards.

Coming from Istanbul? İzmir’s network is smaller and easier, but the card logic is similar; see our Istanbul transport guide.

How much is a bus ride in İzmir?

35 TL with an İzmirim Kart, 17.50 TL in the half-fare hours (05:00–07:00 and 19:00–20:00) and 39 TL with a contactless bank card. A bus, metro, tram or ferry you board 5 to 90 minutes after the first tap is free on an İzmirim Kart.

Can I pay with a credit card?

Yes, on buses, the metro, trams and ferries: tap a contactless bank card and pay 39 TL a ride, with no transfer. Bank cards don’t work on İZBAN or the İZTAŞIT buses.

How do I get from İzmir airport to the city?

Take İZBAN from the airport station: every 13 minutes by day, 28 minutes and 40 TL to Alsancak. At night, buses 200, 202, 204 and 206 leave the airport three times each, for 77 TL.

Is the İzmir metro open all night?

No. The metro and trams run from 06:00 to 00:20. At night the Baykuş buses 910–950 leave Konak at 01:00, 03:00 and 05:00.

Why did İZBAN take 122 TL from my card?

At the gate, İZBAN takes the fare to the far end of the line. Tap the orange validator at your exit within 3 hours and the difference comes back: from the airport to Alsancak, 82.16 TL.

Does the 90-minute transfer work on İZBAN?

No. İZBAN has its own fare by distance; a ride on it is never free and doesn’t make the next ride free.
