Buying in Turkey: what to check at the till

Buying an iPhone in Turkey is the simplest option. The importer registers phones brought in for sale, so you do not need to pay the fee. Under the Consumer Protection Law (No. 6502), a phone’s warranty must last at least two years from the purchase date. As a general rule, you can cancel an online purchase within 14 days without giving a reason. The same two rules cover a TV: the TV guide sets them out.

If a check shows that a phone from a Turkish shop is unregistered (kayıt dışı), it counts as defective goods (ayıplı mal). Under the same law, you can request a refund, a replacement, a price reduction or a free repair. Before paying, go through this checklist.

Before paying

Everything is checked. Keep the invoice and box until the warranty ends.

Bring one from abroad or buy here

An iPhone is often cheaper abroad. But a phone you bring into Turkey needs to be registered, and the fee in 2026 is 54,258 TL. The fee is the same for every model: almost three quarters of the Turkish price for an iPhone 17e, but less than a quarter for an iPhone Duo. The calculator converts the foreign price at the exchange rate, adds the fee and compares the total with Apple’s price in Turkey. The German and UAE prices were taken from Apple’s websites for those countries on 14 October 2026. Enter your own price and your card’s exchange rate.

What the calculator leaves out

Tax refunds when taking the purchase out of that country, the bank’s currency conversion fee and the cost of the trip. Above all, it leaves out your eligibility to register. You can register one phone per passport every three calendar years: if you already registered a phone in 2024, 2025 or 2026, you can register the next one only from 1 January 2027, 2028 or 2029 respectively.

IMEI registration: 120 and 365 days

The IMEI is a 15-digit phone identifier, shown by dialling *#06#. Turkish operators serve only phones whose IMEI is in the Mobil Cihaz Kayıt Sistemi (MCKS) registration system. BTK, Turkey’s communications regulator, runs it. You must register a phone you bring from abroad yourself. The phone registration guide covers who the rule applies to, the fee and the steps. Enter your entry date and the timeline will show your deadlines.

Your dates

  1. 14 Oct 2026Day 0. Entry. The phone works with a Turkish SIM without registration.
  2. 11 Feb 2027Day 120. Last day without registration. After this, the phone stops working with Turkish SIM cards.
  3. 14 Oct 2027Day 365. Your eligibility to register the phone expires.
  4. 1 Jan 2029Next phone. If you register in 2026, the next phone on this passport can be registered no earlier than 1 January 2029.

Example for entry on 14 October 2026. Count from your entry date: it is the more reliable approach.

  • 120 days of use without registration. Register earlier to avoid losing service.
  • 365 days from entry is the deadline. After that, your eligibility to register expires.
  • The passport used for entry: it must have no registrations in the past three years. Register in 2026 and you can register your next phone from 1 January 2029.
  • Bring it with you: phones sent by post or bought online abroad cannot be registered.
  • Pay first: if you register a phone without paying the fee, it will be disconnected and the fee collected with a 50% surcharge.
  • Children can register too: a parent registers a phone for a child under 18 through their own e-Devlet account, using the child’s details.

How to register: step by step

The process depends on whether you have a foreign ID number (yabancı kimlik numarası, YKN) from a residence permit. Find the case that applies to you.

I have a residence permit and YKN

Register yourself on e-Devlet: from age 18, you can get an e-Devlet password at a PTT branch using your residence permit. The steps are below.

Tourist, no YKN

Visit a Turkcell, Vodafone or Türk Telekom shop with your passport and fee payment receipt. If you have a Turkish SIM under a contract, the operator can link the IMEI to that number (eşleştirme): the phone will then work only with that SIM. Ask the operator’s shop about the conditions for linking it.

Student

A student residence permit also gives you a YKN, so the process is the same: get an e-Devlet password at PTT and register online.

I am a Turkish citizen

Register on e-Devlet using your T.C. number. The document you used to enter Turkey is what counts: it must have no registrations in the past three years.

A phone for a child

A child under 18 can bring a phone and register it in their own name. Their mother, father or legal representative submits the application through their own e-Devlet account, using the child’s details.

Logic board replaced

If the logic board was replaced during a repair, the phone needs to be registered again through e-Devlet. You need a document from the repair centre confirming the replacement.

  1. Check eligibilityOpen BTK IMEI Kayıt Hakkı Sorgulama on e-Devlet: it shows whether you can register a phone using your document. You can also call the BTK helpline on 120, which is available around the clock.
  2. Pay the feePay 54,258 TL at a tax office, at a bank or by card through the GİB tax authority’s İnternet Vergi Dairesi. The receipt must show the 15-digit IMEI, your name and your document number.
  3. ApplyUse BTK IMEI Kaydet on e-Devlet: enter the IMEI and payment details. Without a YKN, apply at the operator’s shop.
  4. Check the resultUse IMEI Sorgulama on e-Devlet or call 120.
