Table of Contents

Istanbul has ten metro lines run by Metro İstanbul (M1A, M1B and M2 to M9), plus Marmaray under the Bosphorus and the M11 airport line, which TCDD Taşımacılık runs. This page draws them on one schematic map and gives each line’s stations, operating hours and interchanges, the night service, the airport links and what the Marmaray gate refunds.

Airports by rail M4 and M11
Two airports have a metro. Sabiha Gökçen Airport is the end of M4 from Kadıköy on the Asian side: 23 stations, 33.5 km and 52 minutes one way, according to Metro İstanbul’s line page. The last section to the airport opened on 02.10.2022. M4 is a Metro İstanbul line, so a ride costs the standard fare.
Istanbul Airport is on M11, which runs from Gayrettepe, where it meets M2, through Kağıthane and the airport to Halkalı: 16 stations and 69 km. The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure gave 30 minutes from Halkalı to the airport and 57 minutes from Halkalı to Gayrettepe when the last section opened.

M11 is run by TCDD Taşımacılık and priced by the stations you ride; the gate takes the top fare when you tap in. How the refund works is in the Marmaray chapter, and the fares of both lines are in the finder there.
Marmaray and what the gate refunds
Marmaray runs from Halkalı on the European side to Gebze on the Asian side: 43 stations. Between Sirkeci and Üsküdar the network map draws a tube under the strait. The İBB tariff names TCDD Taşımacılık as its operator, so it is not a Metro İstanbul line.

On the map Marmaray meets other lines at 7 stations: Yenikapı (M1A, M1B, M2), Bakırköy (M3), Ataköy (M9), Üsküdar (M5), Ayrılık Çeşmesi (M4), Bostancı (M8), Halkalı (M11). The 43 stations are in order in the Marmaray card of the map.
The fare depends on the number of stations you ride, not on the time. When you tap in, the gate holds the dearest band of the line, ₺82.17 on Marmaray; when you tap out, it refunds the unused part. Choose a line, a card and the stations you ride:

The night metro Friday and Saturday nights
Seven Metro İstanbul lines run through the night on the nights that connect Friday to Saturday and Saturday to Sunday: M1A, M1B, M2, M4, M5, M6 and M7. On M2 the Sanayi Mahallesi – Seyrantepe shuttle stops at night. The service began on 30.08.2019, and M7 joined on 28.10.2020.

What changes after midnight
From 00:30 to 05:30 the fare is double; from 05:30 it is the normal fare again. M3, M8 and M9 do not run through the night: on days with an extension they only run longer than usual, as Metro İstanbul announces.
The list covers Metro İstanbul’s lines. Marmaray and M11 are run by TCDD Taşımacılık and have a timetable of their own, which this page does not give.

These are the rules on Metro İstanbul’s travel-rules page, checked 20.10.2026. They apply to its own lines, M1A to M9. Marmaray and M11 are run by TCDD Taşımacılık; this page gives no bike, pet or luggage rules for them.
- Folding bikes – single-person folding bikes and e-bikes ride at all operating hours, every day, at no extra fare.
- Other bikes – standard single-person bikes and e-bikes ride outside weekdays 07:00–09:00 and 17:00–20:00, and at weekends without a time limit. Two-person bikes are not accepted. Cyclists may use the lifts if they give way to older, disabled and pregnant passengers and people with children.
- Scooters – folding scooters and e-scooters ride at all operating hours, and non-folding ones outside 07:00–09:00 and 17:00–20:00. Scooters from rental and sharing systems are not allowed in. Inside stations and trains a scooter is carried or pushed, never ridden, and it stays off the escalators.
- Pets – accepted outside 07:00–10:00 and 16:00–20:00 on conditions. Guide dogs and small dogs, up to 5 kg and carried in the lap on a lead of at most 50 cm, are not tied to those hours. Medium and large dogs need a lead of at most 50 cm and a muzzle for the whole ride. Cats travel in a carrier, small pet birds in a cage. One dog per passenger.
- Luggage – one large suitcase plus one cabin-size suitcase or one small or medium backpack ride at no extra fare; each further suitcase costs another ride fare. Anything over 30 kg or 120 × 60 × 50 cm is not accepted.
- Food and drink – eating or drinking anything that smells or can spill, such as drinks other than water or ice cream, is banned inside the vehicles.
- Backpacks – carried in the hand or at foot level, so they do not bother other passengers.

Driverless lines M5 and M7
Metro İstanbul’s own pages call two of its lines driverless. M5, Üsküdar – Sultanbeyli, is described there as Türkiye’s first driverless metro line; its first section opened on 15.12.2017, and the page says all its platforms have platform screen doors. M7, Yıldız – Mahmutbey, is described as a driverless metro, opened on 28.10.2020. The pages do not make that claim for the other lines.

Fares one tariff, one finder
Metro İstanbul’s lines, M1A to M9, charge the standard fare whatever the distance: ₺46.20 with an Istanbulkart or QR and ₺65 with a single limited-use ticket. A second ride within 120 minutes costs less. Marmaray and M11 are priced by the stations you ride: from ₺37.40 to ₺82.17 on Marmaray and from ₺37.40 to ₺73.19 on M11, full fare.
Every fare, transfer and card is in the Istanbul fare finder. The fares here come from one tariff, İBB Council decision 813 of 17 July 2026 (valid from 20.07.2026), checked 19.10.2026.
Questions
How many metro lines does Istanbul have?
Metro İstanbul lists ten metro lines: M1A, M1B and M2 to M9. Marmaray, which crosses the Bosphorus in a tube, and the M11 airport line are run by TCDD Taşımacılık. Trams, funiculars and cable cars are separate lines and are not on this page.
Does the Istanbul metro run at night?
Seven lines do, on the nights from Friday to Saturday and from Saturday to Sunday: M1A, M1B, M2 (not the Sanayi Mahallesi – Seyrantepe shuttle), M4, M5, M6 and M7. The fare is double from 00:30 to 05:30. M3, M8 and M9 stop for the night and only run longer on special days.
When does the metro open and close?
Metro İstanbul’s line pages give 06:00–00:00 for the lines; the M5 and M9 pages write 06:00–24:00, which is the same closing time. Marmaray and M11 have timetables of their own with TCDD Taşımacılık, which this page does not give.
How do I get to the airports by metro?
Sabiha Gökçen Airport is the end of M4, 23 stations and 52 minutes one way from Kadıköy. Istanbul Airport is on M11, which runs between Gayrettepe (where it meets M2) and Halkalı; the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure gives 30 minutes from Halkalı to the airport.
How much does Marmaray cost?
It depends on the stations you ride: from ₺37.40 for 1–7 stations to ₺82.17 for 36–43 on a full fare. The gate takes the top fare when you tap in and gives the unused part back when you tap out, within 240 minutes on Marmaray.
Can I take a bike, a scooter or a dog on the metro?
On Metro İstanbul lines folding bikes and e-bikes ride at all operating hours, and other bikes outside weekdays 07:00–09:00 and 17:00–20:00. Pets are accepted outside 07:00–10:00 and 16:00–20:00 on conditions; guide dogs and small dogs carried in the lap are not tied to those hours. The rules are Metro İstanbul’s; this page gives none for Marmaray and M11.
Is the Istanbul metro driverless?
Metro İstanbul’s own pages call two lines driverless, M5 and M7, and the M5 page adds platform screen doors on every platform. They do not say so for the other lines.
