Kazakhstan Travel Guide: 12 Best Places & Insider Tips (2026)

5 min read Updated: December 26, 2025

Forget everything you think you know about the “Stans.” Kazakhstan is not just massive (it’s nearly the size of Western Europe!), it is also arguably the most underrated adventure playground in the world. While many travelers only imagine endless steppes, here you will find ultra modern skylines that rival Dubai and canyons that look like they were plucked straight from the American Southwest.

With over 20 million residents and an economy that leads Central Asia, the country is transforming rapidly. Following recent administrative reforms, the nation is now divided into 17 regions. For international travelers from the US, UK, and Europe, visiting is easier than ever: many nationalities enjoy visa free entry for up to 30 days.

Why Kazakhstan Belongs on Your Bucket List Right Now

Kazakhstan is a fascinating cultural blend. Around 70% of the population is Muslim, and about 17% is Christian (primarily Russian Orthodox). This mix of Turkic roots, Soviet heritage, and modern global influence makes the country unique. A fun fact for your next trivia night: while the country borders China and Russia, it does not share a border with Mongoliaeven though nomadic culture deeply connects the two.

The capital is once again officially named Astana (after being briefly renamed Nur Sultan between 2019 and 2022). Here are my personal favorites for your 2026 trip, divided into cultural landmarks and natural wonders.

Cultural Highlights: Architecture & History

1. Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi (Turkistan)

This is Kazakhstan’s most significant building and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Commissioned by Tamerlane (Timur) at the end of the 14th century, it was never actually finishedthe main entrance facade still lacks its tiled finish, revealing the original wooden scaffolding and bricks. That’s exactly where its charm lies! Inside, you’ll find the Taykazan, a massive bronze cauldron. For many Kazakhs, a visit here is a sacred pilgrimage.

2. Hazrat Sultan Mosque (Astana)

This mosque is a giant and stands as one of the largest in Central Asia. Capable of holding up to 10,000 worshippers, it looks like an Oriental palace from the Arabian Nights dropped into the middle of the modern steppe. Look closely at the delicate Kazakh ornaments that blend seamlessly with traditional Islamic calligraphy.

3. Palace of Peace and Reconciliation (Astana)

Designed by star architect Norman Foster, this 62-meter high pyramid is a symbol of religious tolerance. The apex is adorned with stained glass depicting dovesrepresenting the 130 nationalities living in Kazakhstan. Insider Tip: Visit the opera house in the basement; the acoustics are phenomenal.

4. Nur Astana Mosque

Before the Hazrat Sultan Mosque was built, this was the city’s religious center. Its measurements are symbolic: the 40-meter dome height represents the age of the Prophet Muhammad at his first revelation, while the 63-meter minarets represent his age at death. It is picturesquely located on the left bank of the river.

5. Zenkov Cathedral (Almaty)

A true marvel in Panfilov Park. It is often claimed to have been built “without a single nail.” While that’s a bit of a mythnails were used for the roof and plasteringthe main wooden structure is indeed ingeniously interlocked. Thanks to this flexible design, the cathedral was one of the few buildings to survive the devastating 1911 earthquake. It remains one of the tallest wooden structures in the world.

6. Museum of Kazakh Folk Musical Instruments

Also located in Panfilov Park, this wooden building looks like something out of a Russian fairy tale. If you want to learn about the “Dombra” (the national string instrument), this is the place. Try to time your visit for a live demonstrationthe sound is hauntingly beautiful.

7. Central State Museum (Almaty)

A must for history buffs, this museum tells the story of Kazakhstan from the Bronze Age through the era of the Khans to modern independence. A highlight is the replica of the “Golden Man,” a Scythian warrior whose armor consists of thousands of intricate gold pieces.

Not to be confused with Tamgaly Tas! This UNESCO site is about 170 km from Almaty and features one of the world’s most important collections of Bronze Age rock art. The “Sun head deities” are the most famous motifs. Bring sturdy shoes and plenty of waterthere is very little shade on-site.

9. Korgalzhyn Biosphere Reserve

Did you know there are flamingos in Kazakhstan? Korgalzhyn is the northernmost breeding colony for greater flamingos in the world. The best time to visit is from May to September. It’s a paradise for birdwatchers, but remember the bug spraynature here is truly wild.

10. Charyn Canyon

The “little brother” of the Grand Canyon. The “Valley of Castles” section, with its bizarre red rock formations, is particularly spectacular. Much like the landscapes found in Cappadocia, the scenery here feels otherworldly. Pro tip: Arrive at sunset when the rocks glow deep crimson.

11. Kok Basar (Almaty)

The “Green Bazaar” is the beating heart of Almaty. You absolutely must try the famous “Aport” apple here (Almaty translates to “Father of the Apple”). It is also the perfect place for authentic souvenirs like felt products or dried fruitshaggling is encouraged!

12. Bayterek Tower (Astana)

The landmark symbol of the capital. The tower represents the mythical Tree of Life, in whose crown the bird Samruk laid a golden egg (the sun). The observation deck is exactly 97 meters higha reference to 1997, the year Astana became the capital. It’s tradition to place your hand in the golden handprint of the first president and make a wish.
