How to choose water in Turkey
For a short stay, compare sealed bottles at nearby shops by their price per litre. For a longer stay, compare that cost with a delivered damacana, the large returnable water container commonly sold in a 19-litre format. The right choice depends on local water advice, storage space, how much you use and the delivery terms.
This guide is based on public-health guidance and producer documents, not a laboratory comparison or a personal taste test. Prices and mineral values are not universal across shops, sources or packaging. We do not rank a brand as the healthiest.
Can you drink tap water? Check locally
A blanket claim that tap water is never drinkable anywhere in Turkey is misleading. Check the current advice and water-quality information from the utility serving your address, including any interruption or contamination notices. For Istanbul, start with İSKİ. Ask your accommodation about the building’s water tank and plumbing; a city-level statement cannot establish the condition of an individual property.
If the status of your supply is unclear, sealed bottled water is a practical temporary option while you check. Follow any specific instructions issued by local public-health authorities.
Compare brands using the exact product
Erikli, Hayat, Buzdağı, Fuska and Saka are options you may encounter. Availability and delivery coverage vary. Rather than assigning a fixed pH or a health score to a whole brand, match the bottle’s source, packaging and date to the relevant report.
- Erikli: its analysis page separates reports by packaging, including damacana. Select the report matching your product.
- Hayat: consult its water-analysis archive; check the source and sample date instead of treating an older result as a test of today’s bottle.
- Buzdağı: its dated reports offer a way to inspect the measured parameters. A report is evidence about the sample, not proof of superiority over every competitor.
- Fuska: review its analysis reports and current label. The brand name alone does not establish suitability for infant formula.
- Saka and supermarket labels: use the producer, source and analysis information on the actual package. Compare the same size and sales channel before judging value.
What pH and mineral figures actually tell you
pH describes acidity or alkalinity; it is not a league table of health benefits. WHO’s explanation of pH treats it as an important operational water-quality parameter and does not set a health-based guideline value. A higher number alone does not demonstrate that a bottle is safer or healthier.
Read sodium, calcium and other listed values from the current label or a matching analysis report, with their units. Do not compare unlike products or copy a figure from an undated ranking. For infant feeding or a medically prescribed mineral restriction, follow a qualified health professional’s advice and the relevant preparation instructions.
Prices: compare the total, not an old national price list
We have not verified a nationwide September 2026 retail price list. The previous late-2025 figures have therefore been removed. Check a retailer or authorized delivery service for your address and record the date, bottle size and whether the price is a promotion.
- Shop bottles: divide the pack price by the total litres. Compare multipacks with multipacks, not with a restaurant’s single-bottle price.
- First damacana order: ask separately for the water, bottle deposit, delivery and any pump or dispenser.
- Later orders: confirm the exchange price and whether your empty bottle is accepted.
For example, a hypothetical 90 TL pack containing six 1.5-litre bottles contains 9 litres and costs 10 TL per litre. This is a calculation example, not a current shop quote. Keep a refundable deposit separate when comparing ongoing costs.
Ordering a 19-litre damacana
- Check which authorized supplier delivers to your address and its delivery window.
- Ask whether the quote is for a first order or an exchange, and request the deposit-return conditions.
- Confirm the bottle size, accepted empty-bottle brand and whether a pump is included or compatible.
- On delivery, check the seal, label and date before accepting the container. Keep the receipt and deposit terms.
Delivery time and deposit refunds depend on the supplier. A large container is only convenient if you can handle it, store it correctly and use the water within the applicable guidance.
Check the seal and store water properly
The Istanbul Provincial Health Directorate advises checking the label, authorization information, dates and intact cap or security band. For returnable polycarbonate damacanas, the brand markings on the container, label and closure should agree. Reject damaged or opened packaging.
Keep water in a cool, clean place away from sunlight and chemicals. Follow the storage instructions, keep the container closed and clean the pump or dispenser when changing bottles. The Directorate advises consuming an opened damacana within one week; choose a smaller format if your household cannot use it in that time.
Still water, maden suyu and soda
For still water, ask for gazsız su; for sparkling water, ask for gazlı su and check the label. Products sold as maden suyu are mineral waters, but their composition and carbonation can differ. Do not assume that all are naturally carbonated or have the same sodium content. The word soda alone may not identify the exact product you want.
Choose according to the actual label and your preferences. Mineral content or bubbles do not, by themselves, establish a digestive benefit or make one brand suitable for everyone.

Check local tap-water advice, compare the exact product and price per litre, inspect the seal and confirm delivery charges. Use dated analysis reports as supporting information, not as a universal brand ranking.
