Seven Turkish leather brands, and what each one is best at: jackets, bags and shoes. Derimod, since 1974: sheepskin jackets for men and women, mid-priced, in 94 stores. It began with four sewing machines in Istanbul. Desa tans its own hides for lined sheepskin jackets and leather bags. Its factories also make for luxury houses. Beymen Club is the luxury department store's own label: lambskin jackets, the priciest in our sample. Matraş, since 1947, makes bags, wallets and belts. Every item we sampled was 20 percent off. Tergan started out making belts in 1972: belts, wallets and business bags, many of them 20 to 50 percent off. FLO is the low-price giant for everyday leather shoes. Its website is a marketplace, so check the seller and the material. GÖN sells leather shoes and sneakers. List prices are high, but every item we sampled was marked down by a third to two thirds. Then read the tag. Hakiki deri is genuine leather. Suni deri is artificial, and deri görünümlü only looks like leather, even in brand stores. Prices, stores, the tag reader and how to read a shoe label are in the full guide on turkpidya.com.
