Taking a taxi in Turkey? Here is what it costs, and how not to overpay. First check: the meter is on. If the driver refuses, step out before the ride begins and take another taxi. An Istanbul yellow taxi starts at 71.94 lira, adds 47.92 per kilometre and has a 230 lira minimum. Pick the colour: yellow is the cheapest at 47.92 a kilometre, turquoise is 55.10 and black is 81.46. From Istanbul Airport to Taksim, the meter comes to about 2,190 lira, before tolls and waiting. Hear “the meter is broken”? Take another taxi. “I have no change”? Settle card or app payment before you board, or carry small notes. The 200 lira note is purple and the 20 is green: read the number, say the amount aloud and count your change. Show the driver: Taksimetreyi açar mısınız? Could you turn the meter on? Something went wrong in Istanbul? Note the plate and door number, keep the receipt and call İBB on 153. Estimate your fare and compare the taxi apps in the full guide on turkpidya.com.
