The city plays an important role in Christianity history, as the cellars in Nevsehir were designed to hide the Christians from the pagan persecution of the Roman Empire.

In 1074, the city entered under the rule of the Seljuk Turks after the victory of Sultan Alp Arslan in the Battle of Malazgirt, to enter the state after that under the rule of the Karaman family, and finally under the rule of the Ottoman Empire around the year 1487.

The city developed significantly when Ibrahim Pasha, who was born in the city, assumed the position of Grand Vizier in the Ottoman Empire. Ibrahim Pasha built a mosque in his hometown and took care of the reconstruction of the city.

According to the Ottoman census of 1881 / 82-1893, the population of Nevsehirr was 39,822 people, consisting of 30,370 Muslims, 8,918 Greeks, 477 Armenians, 36 Catholics, and 21 Protestants.
